Success Story: Optimization of Measurement Times in a CMM Through Retrofitting

We have successfully improved the measurement times of a three-dimensional machine through retrofitting for a leading automotive company.

In a context where precision and time optimization are key factors in ensuring quality and efficiency in production processes, our approach provided a significant competitive advantage.

The Challenge: A Critical Breakdown and a Key Decision

The client faced a major failure in the electronics of their coordinate measuring machine (CMM). The manufacturer's recommendation was to purchase a new system, requiring a considerable investment and downtime. Instead, we proposed a more efficient and cost-effective alternative: retrofitting.

Technical Analysis and Improvement Strategy

Our technical team visited the client¿s facilities to assess the condition of the affected machine, a large Brown & Sharpe Xcel. After a thorough analysis, we determined that the electronics were beyond repair and needed to be replaced.

However, rather than opting for a conventional replacement, we identified an opportunity to enhance the machine¿s performance. Given the company¿s increased production demands, reducing cycle times became a priority.

Implemented Solution: Retrofitting and 5-Axis Measurement Technology

To optimize the measurement process, we conducted a time simulation and selected a combination of advanced technologies:

  • - UCC T5 Control Electronics
  • - Renishaw PH20 Head, enabling 5-axis measurement

Thanks to this solution, we achieved a significant reduction in measurement times, improving process efficiency and adapting it to the client¿s current needs.

Results and Benefits

After implementation, our team completed the ENAC calibration and fine-tuning of the machine, ensuring full operational readiness. The existing MetrologX4 software was maintained, allowing a seamless transition without requiring additional training for the operators.

The results were so successful that the client is now considering upgrading the rest of their machinery with similar modernization strategies¿enhancing productivity without the high costs associated with acquiring new equipment.

Conclusion

This success story demonstrates how retrofitting not only extends the lifespan of equipment but also provides an efficient and cost-effective solution for optimizing industrial processes.

Through technological upgrades, we not only restored the machine¿s functionality but also enhanced its performance and optimized production, delivering a crucial competitive advantage in the automotive industry.
